Did the LGBT+ Conservatives mark their party’s annual conference with a rallying call for gender recognition reform? A conversion therapy ban? LGBT+ asylum protections? Well, not quite.

While Tory equalities minister Liz Truss spent the weekend hobnobbing with a homophobic US conservative think tank, the group for LGBT+ party members was busy holding a lip sync battle.

LGBT+ Conservatives stage a Taylor Swift lip-sync battle.

As part of the virtual event on Friday night, Tory MPs Dehenna Davison and Ben Everitt went head-to-head in a lip sync to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”, dancing, throughout the corridors of Westminster.

Meanwhile, Tory London Assembly member Andrew Boff donned full drag for a rendition of Conchita Wurst’s “Rise Like a Phoenix”.

The contest was judged by Carrie Symonds, fiancée to “tank topped bum boys” opponent and prime minister Boris Johnson, who made an appearance in the stream to wish the competitors good luck.

Davison, who has previously been photographed alongside far-right activists, triumphed over Everitt, who once tweeted that Labour’s Tessa Jowell “looks like a t****y with a hangover”.

The LGBT+ Conservatives said: “Wigs were donned, tunes were blasted, and moves we didn’t think possible were pulled by our colleagues.

“The night was made even more special by the participation of head judge and LGBT+ ally Carrie Symonds, who judged proceedings with the expert eye of an X Factor veteran.

“We look forward to hosting more lip sync showdowns, and thank everyone who has donated to our charitable fund to elevate LGBT+ Conservative candidates in future elections.”

Twitter was not impressed with Tory lip-sync skills.

However, the reaction on Twitter was not altogether positive.

Drag Race UK star Crystal joked: “AOC danced on a roof so these people could do a cadaverous shuffle.”

One respondent wrote: “As a queer person it would take something truly out of this world from the Tories to make me trust them. This is very much not it.”

Another succinctly put it: “I’ve seen more life come from the frozen fish aisle in Waitrose.”

Others pleaded with Taylor Swift, who has made her opposition to Republicans in the US crystal clear, to condemn the use of her song.
