The car of a gay NHS worker was vandalised with paint stripper outside the home he shares with his husband, in what he says was a “homophobic” attack.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, Greg Mahony lives in Port Seton, East Lothian, Scotland, and works for the NHS helping blind and deaf people with interpretation and translation.

During what was supposed to be a relaxing week of annual leave, Mahony was reading in bed with his husband, Andy Pielorz, when the incident took place.

Captured on the couple’s home CCTV, at 1.15am on Monday, July 13, a person dressed in grey and wearing a face covering poured paint stripper all over their Honda Civic.

Mahony noticed the severe damage to the roof and bonnet of the car at around 11am when he took their dog out for a walk, and reported it to the police. He suspects it will cost them hundreds of pounds to repair.

He believes they were targeted because they are a gay couple as no other cars in their street were damaged, and added that the attack has made them feel unsafe in their home.

He said: “It was motivated. He knew exactly where our car was. It’s parked around a corner and he came right up to it.

“It makes us feel unsafe in our own home, that people can come up and target you like this. He was literally just outside as we were reading in bed.”

A police spokesperson told the publication: “Around 11.40am, police received a report of a car being damaged in Laburnum Avenue, in East Lothian and enquiries are ongoing.”

However, it is not yet known whether authorities will be treating the vandalism as a hate crime.

The gay NHS worker later wrote on Facebook: “It’s disgusting what happened and I won’t shut up about it until justice is served!”
